42 kg of Rubbish Removed During Last Friday’s Beach Clean-Up

Last Friday, the beach in front of Oceans 5 Gili Air saw a fantastic turnout of community spirit and dedication to the island’s environment. Organized by our enthusiastic Divemaster candidates, the weekly beach clean-up once again brought together people from all corners of Gili Air, united by a simple goal: to protect the beauty of our island.
Around 25 volunteers joined us for this clean-up session, armed with gloves, bags, and a determination to make a difference. Together, they collected an impressive 42 kilograms of rubbish that had found its way to the shoreline.
Why Beach Clean-Ups Matter – Especially Now
Even though June usually signals the start of the dry season, this year’s weather still brings occasional rain. The rivers in Lombok become highways for waste, carrying rubbish from inland areas directly to the ocean. Eventually, this debris drifts onto our beaches – including the stretch of sand right in front of Oceans 5 Gili Air.
This beach is more than just sand and sea; it’s the first impression many visitors have when they arrive on Gili Air. It’s where families play, divers gather, and sunsets are watched. Keeping this area clean is not only about preserving natural beauty but also about protecting our local economy and the reputation of our island as a clean and welcoming destination.
A Community Effort for the Whole Island
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe that taking care of our beaches is everyone’s responsibility – not just ours as a dive shop, but for business owners, residents, and visitors alike. For the last 15 years, Oceans 5 has organized regular beach clean-ups because we know that a clean beach is a healthy beach – for marine life, for our community, and for our guests.
Our Divemaster candidates lead by example, showing how small actions can create big results. They plan the clean-ups, prepare equipment, and welcome anyone who wants to help. We provide the bags and gloves – all you need to bring is your energy and a positive attitude!
Join Us Next Friday!
If you missed last week’s clean-up, don’t worry – there’s another chance to get involved. Next Friday at 17:00, we’ll gather once more in front of Oceans 5 Gili Air to clean the beach and protect the ocean we all love.
Whether you live here, work here, or are just visiting, your help truly matters. Every piece of rubbish removed is one less threat to our marine park, our turtles, and the beautiful reefs that make the Gili Islands so special.
Bring your friends, bring your family – and help us show that keeping Gili Air clean is something we can only achieve together.
Thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday and to everyone who continues to care about our beaches and reefs. See you next week at the clean-up!
