Diving during Ramadan

Diving Three Times a Day During Ramadan at Oceans 5 Gili Air
Ramadan is a special time across Indonesia. On the Gili Islands, the rhythm of daily life gently shifts. Evenings become vibrant with family gatherings, shared meals, and prayers. Mornings start earlier, and days can feel longer—especially for those who are fasting.
But if you are planning your diving holiday and wondering whether Ramadan affects your underwater adventures, here is the simple answer:
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, diving continues three times per day — safely, professionally, and without compromise.
A Dive Center Built Around a Strong Local Team
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we are proud to work with six experienced local divemasters. This strong team structure is not just a number on paper—it is a huge operational advantage, especially during Ramadan.
Fasting from sunrise to sunset requires discipline and energy management. Local staff celebrate Ramadan seriously. Evenings are for family, community, prayer, and breaking the fast together. Naturally, this can mean shorter nights and potentially less sleep.
For many businesses, this could lead to fatigue during the daytime. But at Oceans 5, we plan ahead.
Instead of overworking individuals, we rotate schedules intelligently. Our dives are organized so that each divemaster gets the necessary rest between dives. No one is pushed to do three dives in a row without proper recovery. Safety and professionalism remain our priority—always.
Because we have six local SSI Divemasters, we can maintain our full schedule while respecting the physical demands of fasting.
Our Dive Schedule During Ramadan
Nothing changes for our guests.
We continue offering:
- 08:30 – Morning Dive
- 11:30 – Midday Dive
- 14:30 – Afternoon Dive
The only exception is Friday:
- 08:30 – Morning Dive
- 14:30 – Afternoon Dive
- (No 11:30 dive on Fridays to respect prayer time.)
Ramadan does not reduce our dive frequency. It does not shorten our dive briefings. It does not lower our standards.
What changes is our internal organization—so our guests experience the same high level of service they expect throughout the year.
Energy Management and Professional Diving
Diving is a professional activity. It requires focus, awareness, and physical control. As an SSI Instructor Training Center, we understand that safety underwater begins with a well-prepared team above water.
Our divemasters are not only certified; they are official SSI Divemasters, trained to lead dives responsibly, manage groups, and adapt to different experience levels.
During Ramadan, we adjust:
- Who guides which dive
- How many dives each guide does per day
- Rest periods between dives
- Boat crew rotation
Because of this structured planning, our team stays sharp and focused. Guests often do not even realize it is Ramadan—because the diving operation runs smoothly.
Experience Around the Gili Islands
The Gili Islands offer some of the most diverse diving in Indonesia. From vibrant coral gardens to drift dives and wrecks, the region provides something for every certification level.
Our local guides grew up around these waters. They know:
- Where turtles rest
- Which bommies attract reef sharks
- Where the currents shift during tidal changes
- Which cleaning stations are active
Diving around Gili Islands during Ramadan is actually a beautiful experience. The island atmosphere is calmer during the day. Boats are less crowded. The energy feels peaceful.
Underwater, nothing changes at all. The marine life does not fast.
You can still expect encounters with:
- Green and hawksbill turtles
- Reef sharks at Shark Point
- Schools of snapper and fusiliers
- Blue-spotted stingrays
- Macro life at sandy sites
Our team ensures that every dive is matched carefully to certification level. We do not mix beginner Open Water divers with instructor-level divers in the same group. This keeps dives comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.
Small Groups, Even During Ramadan
One of the strengths of Oceans 5 Gili Air is our commitment to small dive groups. Even when business slows slightly during Ramadan, we maintain the same philosophy:
- No overcrowded boats
- Proper dive briefings
- Relaxed pace
- Personal attention
Because we run three dive times daily, divers can choose the schedule that suits them best. Some guests prefer morning dives when the sea is calm and the air is cool. Others enjoy the relaxed afternoon dive before sunset.
Ramadan does not mean reduced service. It simply means we adapt internally while maintaining the same guest experience.
Respecting Local Culture While Maintaining Professional Standards
Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, and Lombok in particular has a strong cultural identity. Respecting Ramadan is not optional—it is part of being a responsible business here.
At Oceans 5, we encourage visitors to:
- Dress respectfully when walking through the village
- Understand that some local restaurants may close during the day
- Be patient and supportive of cultural traditions
But underwater, diving continues exactly as it should.
Our divemasters are used to fasting while working professionally. They have done this for years. What makes the difference is that we do not overload them.
A tired divemaster is not acceptable. That is why we use our team structure wisely.
Why Six Local Divemasters Make the Difference
Some dive shops operate with minimal staffing. During Ramadan, that can become a challenge. If two or three guides are fasting and need rest, dive operations may reduce frequency or cancel dives.
At Oceans 5, we do not face that issue.
Having six experienced local divemasters means:
- Flexible scheduling
- Backup guides available
- Safety margins remain high
- No last-minute cancellations
It also means our guests dive with professionals who know these waters intimately.
Each guide has hundreds—often thousands—of dives around the Gilis. They understand currents, visibility patterns, seasonal marine life shifts, and boat logistics.
This experience cannot be replaced.
Diving Conditions During Ramadan Season
Ramadan shifts each year because it follows the lunar calendar. Often it falls near the end of the rainy season or the beginning of calmer months.
During this time, you can expect:
- Warm water temperatures (27–29°C)
- Good visibility
- Less crowded dive boats compared to peak season
- Peaceful island atmosphere
For divers who prefer a relaxed experience rather than high-season intensity, Ramadan can actually be a hidden gem period to visit.
Safety Remains Our Core Focus
As an SSI Instructor Training Center, safety and structure define our operations. Ramadan does not change that.
Before every dive:
- Proper briefing
- Buddy checks
- Dive planning
- Certification level grouping
After every dive:
- Debriefing
- Logbook assistance
- Marine life discussion
Our guides remain attentive, calm, and professional. If conditions are strong, we adapt dive sites accordingly. If currents increase unexpectedly, our team manages it confidently.
Professional diving is not seasonal. It is consistent.
Friday Schedule Adjustment
Fridays in Lombok are important for communal prayer. Out of respect, we do not schedule the 11:30 dive on Fridays.
Instead:
- 08:30 dive runs as usual
- 14:30 dive runs as usual
This small adjustment allows our team to attend prayers while maintaining two solid dive options for guests.
Planning ahead ensures smooth operations without affecting your diving holiday.
Diving Around the Gilis During Ramadan – What Guests Experience
For guests, Ramadan diving at Oceans 5 feels like:
- Same dive times
- Same professionalism
- Same small groups
- Same marine life
- Same attention to safety
The only noticeable difference may be the peaceful daytime atmosphere on the island and the beautiful energy in the evenings when the community gathers to break the fast.
It is a unique cultural experience combined with world-class tropical diving.
Nothing Changes Underwater
Coral reefs do not observe Ramadan. Turtles continue feeding. Reef sharks continue cruising. Anthias continue dancing above coral heads.
If you are worried that dive operations slow down or standards drop during Ramadan, you can relax.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air:
- We dive three times daily.
- We organize our team responsibly.
- We respect local traditions.
- We never compromise safety.
Our six local SSI Divemasters are the backbone of this operation. Their experience, professionalism, and teamwork ensure that fasting does not affect performance.
Final Thoughts
Ramadan is a time of reflection, discipline, and community. At Oceans 5 Gili Air, it is also simply another beautiful diving season.
While evenings are lively and spiritual, days remain focused and professional. Our dive schedule continues at 08:30, 11:30, and 14:30 (except Fridays at 11:30). Our guests continue exploring the reefs of the Gili Islands with confidence.
If you are planning your dive trip and wondering whether Ramadan changes anything—the answer is clear:
Nothing changes when it comes to diving.
The ocean is waiting.
