Quality Over Quantity
If you search online for an SSI Open Water Course, you will quickly find advertisements promising to turn you into a certified diver in just two days. For many people, this sounds attractive. After all, who wouldn’t want to become a diver as quickly as possible?
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, however, we take a very different approach.
Here, the goal is not simply to produce certifications. Our goal is to create confident, knowledgeable, and safe diverswho truly understand the underwater world they are entering. Certification is not the objective — it is the natural result of good teaching and proper training.
For this reason, Oceans 5 Gili Air does not offer two-day open water courses, and we never will.
The Problem With Two-Day Open Water Courses
The SSI Open Water Course is designed to introduce new divers to a completely different environment — the underwater world. Students must learn how to breathe underwater, control buoyancy, communicate without speaking, and manage equipment that keeps them alive in an environment humans are not naturally adapted to.
This takes time.
Yet many dive centers advertise “fast track” courses, where students complete all required pool sessions, theory, and ocean dives in just two days. While this may technically allow someone to complete the required minimum training, it leaves very little time for proper learning.
Think about the structure of a typical Open Water Course. Students must complete:
- Six confined water (pool) training sessions
- Four open water dives
- Multiple theory modules
- Knowledge reviews and exams
Trying to compress all of this into two days creates significant limitations.
Students barely have time to become comfortable in the water before moving on to the next skill. Instructors often need to rush through exercises simply to stay on schedule. There is little opportunity for repetition, reflection, or improvement.
Even more concerning is the academic part of the course.
Many dive centers assume that once students complete the online learning modules, the theory does not need to be revisited. The instructor simply confirms completion and moves on.
But learning to dive is not just about finishing an online manual. It is about understanding the information.
Oceans 5 Gili Air: A Different Philosophy
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we follow a philosophy that prioritizes quality over quantity.
We do not measure success by the number of certifications issued. Instead, we measure success by the confidence and competence of the divers we train.
Our SSI Open Water Course is normally conducted over three to four days, giving students the time they need to truly learn.
This extended schedule allows us to focus on what matters most:
- Comfort in the water
- Understanding of diving theory
- Mastery of essential skills
- Confidence during ocean dives
Students are never rushed through the course. Instead, instructors can adjust the pace to match the needs of each individual student.
Learning at the Student’s Pace
Every student learns differently.
Some people feel immediately comfortable underwater. Others may need more time to adjust to breathing through a regulator or managing buoyancy.
In a fast-track course, there is often pressure to move forward regardless of how the student feels. The schedule is fixed, and the course must finish within the advertised timeframe.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, this pressure does not exist.
Our instructors have the freedom to adapt the course to the pace of the student. If someone needs additional practice with a skill, they receive it. If a student needs more time in the pool before going into the ocean, that time is provided.
This approach ensures that when students reach their first ocean dive, they are prepared and confident, not nervous and rushed.
More Time in the Pool Creates Better Divers
Confined water training is where divers develop the foundation of their diving skills.
This is where students learn to:
- Clear their mask underwater
- Recover a lost regulator
- Control buoyancy
- Remove and replace equipment
- Communicate with their instructor and dive buddy
When these skills are practiced calmly and repeatedly in a controlled environment like a pool, students gain confidence and muscle memory.
When these same skills are rushed through, students may technically pass the exercise but never fully develop the skill.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe that more time in the pool creates better divers.
Students practice until they are comfortable — not until the clock says it is time to move on.
Academic Sessions That Actually Teach
Another major difference in the Open Water Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air is our academic sessions.
These are not quick five-minute briefings.
Instead, they are real classroom discussions where instructors check if students truly understand the foundations of diving.
Topics such as:
- Pressure and depth
- Equalization
- Dive planning
- Nitrogen absorption
- Emergency procedures
- Equipment function
are discussed in detail.
Even though SSI provides excellent digital learning materials, we do not assume that finishing the online part means everything is understood.
During the academic sessions, instructors ask questions, clarify misunderstandings, and ensure that students fully grasp the concepts that keep divers safe underwater.
This extra time makes a huge difference in the quality of the training.
Certification Is Earned — Not Guaranteed
Another important aspect of our philosophy is honesty.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, students can fail the Open Water Course.
This may sound strict, but it is actually essential for safety.
Becoming a certified diver means being able to safely dive anywhere in the world. It means understanding how to manage equipment, monitor depth and air supply, and respond calmly to unexpected situations.
If a student is not yet ready to dive independently with a buddy, issuing a certification would not be responsible.
Fortunately, failures are extremely rare — not because standards are lowered, but because students are given the time and support they need to succeed.
If someone struggles with a skill, we practice more. If someone needs additional training, we provide it.
The result is that when students receive their certification, they truly deserve it.
The Advantage of Learning on Gili Air
The location of Oceans 5 Gili Air also plays an important role in the learning experience.
Gili Air is known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful marine life, making it the perfect environment for beginner divers.
The island has:
- Calm diving conditions
- Warm tropical water
- Healthy coral reefs
- Diverse marine life including turtles and reef fish
Because the dive sites are located close to the island, students spend less time traveling and more time focusing on their training.
Without the distractions of busy nightlife or large crowds, students can fully concentrate on becoming divers.
Small Groups and Personal Attention
Another key element of the SSI Open Water Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air is small group sizes.
Courses are conducted with a maximum of four students per instructor, ensuring that every participant receives personal attention.
Students are never treated as just another number in a large group.
Instead, instructors get to know each student, understand their strengths and challenges, and provide individual guidance throughout the course.
This personal approach creates a relaxed learning environment, which is especially important for beginners who may feel nervous about their first dives.
Quality Teaching Creates Confident Divers
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, our instructors believe that teaching diving carries a great responsibility.
The underwater world is beautiful, but it requires respect and knowledge to explore safely.
By taking the time to properly train new divers, we ensure that our students leave the course with:
- Confidence in their skills
- A strong understanding of dive theory
- Respect for the marine environment
- The ability to dive safely with a buddy anywhere in the world
This is why we choose quality over quantity.
Why Oceans 5 Will Never Offer a Two-Day Course
Two-day courses may produce certifications quickly, but they do not necessarily produce good divers.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe that becoming a diver should be an experience — not a race against the clock.
Our goal is simple:
Create divers, not just certifications.
That is why we take the time needed to teach properly.
Because in the end, the number of certifications issued does not matter.
What matters is the quality of the divers we send into the ocean.
