Both the Instructor Training Course and Instructor Evaluation take place on Gili Air, Indonesia.
More Than Just Passing the Evaluation
The SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 is designed to prepare you for more than the final evaluation. Our goal is to help you become a capable, confident and environmentally responsible dive instructor.
The 16-day program combines classroom workshops, confined-water training, open-water teaching sessions and practical experience. You will learn how to organise courses, teach diving theory, demonstrate skills clearly, manage students and respond effectively when situations do not go according to plan.
At Oceans 5, all open-water skills are taught while neutrally buoyant. We do not train instructors to kneel unnecessarily on the seabed. This creates better instructors, improves the realism of the training and helps protect the coral reefs where future students will learn to dive.
Small Groups and Personal Attention
Oceans 5 keeps its SSI Instructor Training Courses small, with a maximum of six candidates.
Small groups allow our SSI Instructor Trainers to spend more time with every candidate. Presentations and teaching sessions can be reviewed in detail, while additional practice can be arranged whenever necessary.
The focus is not on rushing candidates through the program. It is about helping each person develop at their own pace and leave Gili Air ready to teach real students.
Train in a Professional Dive-Centre Environment
Oceans 5 is an established SSI Instructor Training Center located directly beside the harbour on Gili Air. Candidates train in a working dive centre with:
- Two purpose-built training pools
- Three dive boats
- Dedicated classroom facilities
- Experienced SSI Instructor Trainers
- A large international and Indonesian dive team
- Easy access to the dive sites around the Gili Islands
- Regular opportunities to observe real courses and dive-centre operations
Training inside an active dive centre gives candidates a better understanding of the daily responsibilities of a professional instructor.
Instructor-Level Specialties
The program includes more than the SSI Open Water Diving Instructor qualification. Candidates also work toward valuable instructor-level ratings, including:
- Perfect Buoyancy
- Diver Stress & Rescue
- Enriched Air Nitrox
- Science of Diving
- Dive Guide and Divemaster training credentials
These qualifications help new instructors become more versatile and more attractive to potential employers.
Continue Learning After the Course
Passing the Instructor Evaluation is an important achievement, but it is only the beginning of your career.
After completing the program, successful candidates may join a two- to three-week instructor internship at Oceans 5. During this period, new instructors can observe experienced instructors, assist with courses and gain additional practical experience in a supportive environment.
This transition from candidate to working instructor can make a major difference when applying for your first professional position.
Who Can Join?
The program is open to qualified Divemasters and Dive Guides who meet the SSI prerequisites. Divemasters from other recognised training agencies, including PADI Divemasters, can also enter the SSI instructor pathway.
