What Comes After Your Advanced Diving Course?

You have discovered the pleasure of diving, gained experience and started to feel more comfortable underwater. Now you may be wondering what comes next.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, two options appeal to divers with different goals: Divemaster training and technical diving courses. One develops your ability to support and lead other divers. The other builds skills for more demanding diving. Both begin with a willingness to practise, listen and keep learning.

Start with What You Enjoy About Diving

Think about the moments you look forward to most. Do you enjoy helping a buddy feel comfortable, talking about marine life and understanding how a dive centre operates? Or are you curious about equipment configurations, precise buoyancy and detailed dive planning?

Your answer can help you choose a direction. You can also spend more time enjoying recreational dives before deciding. There is no need to collect qualifications faster than you can build experience.

Develop Your Leadership

Divemaster Training on Gili Air

A Divemaster internship gives you time to understand the responsibilities behind a well-organised dive. At Oceans 5, the SSI programme combines mentoring, workshops and supervised practical experience over six to eight weeks.

The focus extends beyond your own diving. You learn to observe others, communicate clearly and contribute to dive preparation.

  • Develop dive briefings and guiding skills.
  • Build experience assisting instructors under supervision.
  • Strengthen your buoyancy, awareness and practical problem-solving.
  • Learn how daily activities are organised at a working dive centre.

It is a route to consider if you enjoy working with people and want to explore professional dive leadership.

Explore Technical Diving in the Gili Islands

Technical training offers another direction. At Oceans 5 Dive Tech, TDI courses address skills such as trim, equipment configuration, gas management and team communication.

For divers curious about this approach, Intro to Tech focuses on foundations while staying within no-decompression limits. Sidemount offers an opportunity to learn a different equipment configuration. Neither course alone qualifies you for planned decompression diving.

Further options include Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures for divers who meet the relevant prerequisites. Your starting point depends on your qualifications, experience and goals.

Different Goals, Shared Foundations

Divemaster and technical training develop different responsibilities, but both benefit from calm, controlled diving. Good buoyancy makes it easier to observe a group, communicate with a teammate and maintain distance from the reef.

Preparation matters too. Checking equipment carefully, discussing a plan and recognising when to ask for help are habits worth developing at every level.

The two paths are separate qualifications. Divemaster certification does not qualify you for technical dives, and technical diver training does not qualify you to guide recreational customers professionally.

Choose a Course That Fits Your Goals

Your next step should match the kind of diver you want to become. That might mean learning to lead, exploring technical skills or simply spending more time in the water.

Tell the Oceans 5 team about your certification level, recent diving experience and interests. We can discuss a suitable starting point and check the course requirements with you.
