The 21st of March marks a very special day in Indonesia: the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the Idul Fitri holiday. On Gili Air, this important celebration brings a different atmosphere to the island. The beaches are still beautiful, the sea is still inviting, but the rhythm of daily life changes for a few days as family, tradition, prayer, food, and community become the center of island life.

For visitors, this is a unique moment to experience a more cultural side of Gili Air, Indonesia. The island becomes a little quieter, some businesses close temporarily, and others operate with adjusted hours. This is not because the island stops, but because the local community takes time to celebrate one of the most important moments of the year together.

A Quieter Gili Air During Idul Fitri

Gili Air is known for its relaxed atmosphere, but during Idul Fitri, the island becomes even calmer. Many local families spend time visiting relatives, sharing meals, and taking part in traditions that have been part of life here for generations. As a result, some restaurants, shops, and small businesses may be closed, while others may work with reduced or rescheduled hours.

For travelers, this quieter side of the island can be a beautiful experience. It offers the chance to see Gili Air beyond tourism and discover the local culture that makes the island so special. It is a day when the local community slows down and focuses on what matters most: faith, family, and togetherness.

Family, Food, and Traditions on Gili Air

The heart of Idul Fitri on Gili Air is family. After a month of fasting during Ramadan, this holiday is a time of celebration, forgiveness, and connection. Families gather in their homes, children receive gifts, and tables are filled with delicious traditional food prepared for relatives, neighbors, and guests.

Food plays an important role during the holiday. Homes are full of special dishes, sweet treats, and snacks shared throughout the day. Presents and small gifts are also an important part of the celebration, especially for children. The whole island reflects a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and it is not uncommon for visitors to be invited to join a local family for food. This genuine hospitality is one of the most beautiful parts of spending Idul Fitri in Indonesia.

Gili Air: A Small Muslim Paradise Island in Indonesia

Many people know Gili Air for diving, snorkeling, beaches, and sunsets. But Gili Air is also a small Muslim island community with strong traditions and deep cultural roots. Oceans 5 Gili Air During the Idul Fitri Holidays

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe it is important to respect and support the traditions of our local team and community. That is why Oceans 5 Gili Air will be open on the 21st of March, but with a small change to the daily dive schedule.

On the 21st of March, the first dive of the day at 8:30 will be skipped. This gives all staff the opportunity to visit the mosque for the important morning prayer and celebrate the beginning of Idul Fitri with their families.

In addition, from the 20th of March until the 23rd of March, Oceans 5 Gili Air will operate with fewer staff members than usual. This allows everyone on the team the chance to fully join the Idul Fitri holiday celebrations. We believe that supporting our staff during these important family days is part of being a respectful and community-minded dive center on Gili Air.
