The SSI Instructor Evaluation at Oceans 5 Gili Air

SSI ITC Indonesia | Oceans 5 Gili Air

For many divemasters, becoming a SSI Instructor is the next big step in turning a passion for diving into a professional career. It is an exciting dream, but it is also a serious investment of time, energy, and money. That is why many candidates ask the same question before joining an SSI Instructor Training Course: how do I pass the SSI Instructor Evaluation?

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we understand that question very well. Of course, the SSI Instructor Evaluation is important. It is the final confirmation that you are ready to become a certified SSI Instructor. But at Oceans 5 Gili Air, our philosophy is different from courses that only focus on passing the final assessment.

We do not teach candidates simply to pass the SSI Instructor Evaluation. We teach candidates to become confident SSI Instructors with environmental awareness, strong teaching ability, and a deep understanding of SSI standards and procedures. When that becomes your focus, the evaluation becomes a natural step instead of a major obstacle.

Passing the SSI Instructor Evaluation Starts Before the Evaluation

Many people think the most important part of an SSI ITC Indonesia program is the final evaluation itself. That is understandable. You paid money to become a professional dive instructor, and you want to leave the course with your certification in hand. But the truth is that the best way to pass the SSI Instructor Evaluation is not by focusing only on the evaluation day.

The best way to pass is by becoming a complete instructor during the entire training journey.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, our SSI Instructor Trainers work on building real instructors. That means learning how to teach properly, how to organize confined water and open water sessions, how to communicate clearly with students, and how to apply the SSI system in a professional way. When you build those skills step by step, the final evaluation becomes much less stressful.

More Than Just an SSI Instructor Training Course

One of the things that makes the SSI Instructor Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air different is that we do more than just teach the basic curriculum. We have added extra workshops to the SSI ITC because we believe candidates need more than repetition and exam practice to become strong instructors.

These additional workshops are designed to show candidates what it really means to work as a real instructor in a real dive center. Instead of only looking at what is necessary to pass the evaluation, we go further and help candidates understand how to become dive professionals who are ready for the industry.

During the course, candidates work on teaching structure, professional presentations, student control, positioning in the water, and overall confidence. These are all essential parts of becoming a successful SSI Instructor, and they are also the reasons why candidates feel much more prepared by the time the evaluation arrives.

Understanding SSI Standards and Rules

A strong instructor is not someone who only memorizes the right answers for assessment day. A strong instructor understands the standards, rules, and procedures behind the training system.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we believe that a deep understanding of SSI rules and regulations is one of the most important foundations for every future instructor. This gives candidates the confidence to make the right decisions, to teach correctly, and to work professionally after certification.

When you truly understand the standards, you are no longer trying to guess your way through an evaluation. You know what you are doing, and that makes a huge difference during the SSI Instructor Evaluation.

Environmental Awareness as Part of Modern Dive Education

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we also believe that a modern dive instructor must be environmentally aware. An instructor is not only a teacher. An instructor is also an ambassador for the ocean.

Students copy what they see. If an instructor touches the reef, kneels on the bottom, or ignores marine life, students may believe that this is acceptable. That is why we focus strongly on teaching with respect for the underwater environment.

We want our candidates to understand that good buoyancy, responsible demonstrations, and careful student control are not only better teaching methods, but also an important part of protecting the marine park around the Gili Islands. This environmental philosophy is one of the key reasons why the SSI Instructor Training Course in Indonesia at Oceans 5 Gili Air is different.

Why the SSI Instructor Evaluation Becomes Easier

So, what is the secret to passing the SSI Instructor Evaluation?

The answer is simple. Focus on becoming a real instructor, not just a candidate trying to pass an exam.

When you build real confidence, understand the standards, improve your presentations, learn how to control students properly, and develop environmental awareness, the final evaluation becomes far less intimidating. By the time you reach that point, you are not pretending to be ready. You are ready.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we want the SSI Instructor Evaluation to feel like a small reward at the end of the course, not the only reason for doing it. If your goal is to become a complete instructor, then passing the evaluation will simply be part of the process.

Choose the Right SSI ITC in Indonesia

If you are searching for an SSI ITC in Indonesia, it is important to choose a program that does more than teach you how to survive assessment day. The dive industry needs instructors who are confident, professional, knowledgeable, and environmentally responsible.

That is exactly what we aim to create at Oceans 5 Gili Air.

Our goal is not only that you pass the SSI Instructor Evaluation. Our goal is that you leave as a real SSI Instructor, ready to teach anywhere in the world and ready to represent the dive industry in the right way.

Start Your SSI Instructor Journey at Oceans 5 Gili Air

If your dream is to become an SSI Instructor, then choose a course that prepares you for more than just one final evaluation. Choose a course that builds confidence, teaching ability, environmental awareness, and a strong professional foundation.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, our SSI Instructor Trainers do not just teach candidates how to pass the SSI Instructor Evaluation. We teach candidates how to become complete dive instructors.

And when that becomes your focus, the evaluation itself becomes just a small step in a much bigger journey.

Try the SSI Basic Diver Program at Oceans 5 Gili Air

Many people who visit Gili Air already feel comfortable in the ocean. They enjoy snorkeling, swimming above coral reefs, and spotting turtles in the clear tropical water. But after a while, many snorkelers start thinking the same thing: what is it like to go a little further and explore the underwater world below the surface?

Not everyone has the time to complete a full Open Water Diver Course during their holiday. A full course takes several days, and some travelers simply want to experience scuba diving first before deciding if they want to continue. That is exactly why Oceans 5 Gili Air offers introduction dives, called the SSI Basic Diver Program.

The SSI Basic Diver Program on Gili Air is the perfect option for people who love snorkeling, feel relaxed in the water, and want to discover what it is like to breathe underwater without committing to a full diving course.

What Is the SSI Basic Diver Program?

The SSI Basic Diver Program is an introductory scuba diving experience for people who have never dived before but want to try it in a safe and professional way. It is not a full certification course, but it gives you the opportunity to experience real scuba diving under the direct supervision of an SSI Professional.

During the program, you will first receive a clear and simple explanation about the diving equipment, breathing underwater, and the most important safety rules. After that, you will practice a few basic scuba skills in a controlled environment before going into the ocean with your instructor.

Once you feel comfortable, it is time for the real adventure. Together with your instructor, you will explore the underwater world to a maximum depth of 12 meters. Throughout the entire dive, your instructor stays with you, guiding you step by step and making sure you feel comfortable and relaxed.

One of the great advantages of the program is that the experience can later be credited toward the SSI Scuba Diver or SSI Open Water Diver Program within six months. So if you fall in love with scuba diving, your first steps already count toward the next level.

Who Is the Basic Diver Program For?

The Basic Diver Program is ideal for people who are already comfortable in the water and enjoy snorkeling, but do not have enough time to complete a full diving course. It is also perfect for travelers who are curious about scuba diving and want to try it first before starting a certification program.

This program is especially suitable for:

  • Snorkelers who want to explore deeper than the surface
  • Travelers with limited time on Gili Air
  • People who want to try scuba diving before committing to a full course
  • Ocean lovers who feel confident in the water
  • Holidaymakers looking for a unique and unforgettable experience

The Second SSI Instructor Training Course Begins Soon at Oceans 5 Gili Air

The Second SSI Instructor Training Course Begins Soon at Oceans 5 Gili Air

The Second SSI Instructor Training Course Begins Soon

In just one week, Oceans 5 Gili Air will start its second SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC), led by Instructor Trainer Waz. After the success of the first course earlier this year, the upcoming program continues the dive center’s commitment to creating confident, environmentally responsible scuba instructors.

The 16-day SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air has been carefully designed to go beyond simply preparing candidates to pass an instructor evaluation. The focus is on building real instructors — professionals who can confidently teach diving anywhere in the world while protecting the marine environment they work in.

Located inside the protected waters of the Gili Matra Marine Park, Oceans 5 believes that instructor training should reflect the real conditions instructors experience every day in the ocean.

Moving Away from Old-School Teaching Methods

For many years, traditional instructor training methods often involved teaching skills while kneeling on the ocean floor. While this method can simplify demonstrations, it does not reflect how instructors actually teach divers in real-world conditions.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, this approach is intentionally avoided.

Instead of kneeling on the seabed, instructor candidates learn to demonstrate and control skills in neutral buoyancy and stable hovering positions. This method reflects the reality of how instructors work during courses and fun dives.

Teaching in neutral positions offers several advantages:

  • It improves the instructor’s own buoyancy control
  • It allows instructors to demonstrate realistic diving techniques
  • It protects fragile marine ecosystems
  • It creates more confident and adaptable instructors

In a marine park environment like the Gili Islands, protecting the underwater environment is not optional — it is a responsibility.

Protecting the Ocean While Teaching

Working as a scuba instructor means spending most of your professional life underwater. For the team at Oceans 5, the ocean is not just a workplace — it is their office.

And the philosophy is simple:

Why would you destroy your own office?

Corals grow extremely slowly and can take decades to recover from damage. When divers kneel on the seabed, sediment can smother corals, fragile structures can break, and marine life can be disturbed.

By teaching instructor candidates to maintain neutral buoyancy while demonstrating skills, Oceans 5 ensures that new instructors develop habits that support marine conservation from the very beginning of their careers.

This teaching philosophy has become one of the defining characteristics of instructor training at Oceans 5 Gili Air.

A Realistic Approach to Instructor Training

Another advantage of this approach is that it prepares candidates for real teaching situations.

Most instructors around the world teach in environments where kneeling on the seabed is either impossible or environmentally unacceptable. Drift dives, coral reefs, and rocky substrates require instructors to have strong buoyancy and precise control.

The SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 focuses on building these skills through:

  • Neutral buoyancy skill demonstrations
  • Realistic teaching simulations
  • Controlled hovering techniques
  • Instructor positioning and student management
  • Environmental awareness during training dives

This realistic approach ensures that new instructors are prepared to work immediately after certification, whether in Indonesia or anywhere else in the world.

The Rise of SSI on Gili Air

Another interesting development in the local dive industry is the rapid growth of SSI dive centers on Gili Air.

Today, the island has nine SSI dive centers, compared to only five dive centers affiliated with other major training organizations. This shift reflects a growing demand for SSI professionals on the island.

For candidates considering becoming an instructor, this has an important implication:

Training as an SSI Instructor on Gili Air significantly increases employment opportunities on the island.

Dive centers often prefer instructors trained within the same system they operate. Completing an SSI Instructor Training Course locally gives candidates the opportunity to build relationships with dive centers, instructors, and managers across the island.

A Global Trend in the Dive Industry

The shift toward SSI is not only visible on Gili Air.

Across Indonesia and many other parts of the world, more dive centers are adopting SSI programs due to the flexibility of the training system, modern digital learning materials, and the strong integration of environmental awareness into diver education.

As the number of SSI dive centers continues to grow, so does the demand for qualified SSI instructors.

For new professionals entering the dive industry, choosing the right training organization can make a significant difference in job opportunities and career development.

Training with Instructor Trainer Waz

The upcoming course will again be led by Instructor Trainer Waz, whose experience and teaching style have already helped multiple candidates successfully become instructors.

During the 16-day program, candidates will follow the official SSI Instructor Training curriculum while also participating in additional workshops designed by Oceans 5.

These include:

  • Dry skill workshops
  • Skill video analysis sessions
  • Teaching presentation workshops
  • Environmental awareness training
  • Realistic underwater teaching simulations

These additional elements help candidates refine their teaching skills and build confidence before entering the professional diving industry.

A New Generation of Environmental Instructors

The goal of the SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air is not simply to produce instructors who can pass an evaluation.

The goal is to create a new generation of dive professionals who:

  • Teach with excellent buoyancy control
  • Protect the marine environment
  • Communicate clearly with students
  • Demonstrate skills in realistic conditions
  • Represent the diving industry responsibly

By integrating conservation awareness into instructor training, Oceans 5 ensures that its graduates are not only skilled teachers but also ambassadors for the ocean.

The Next Step for Future Dive Professionals

With the next SSI Instructor Training Course starting in just one week, Oceans 5 Gili Air continues to build its reputation as a center for high-quality, environmentally responsible instructor training in Indonesia.

For divers who dream of turning their passion into a profession, the program offers a unique opportunity to develop teaching skills while learning in one of the most beautiful marine environments in the world.

The waters around Gili Air, inside the Gili Matra Marine Park, provide the perfect classroom — and Oceans 5 ensures that this classroom remains protected for future generations of divers.

Becoming a dive instructor is not just about teaching skills.

It is about leading by example, protecting the ocean, and inspiring others to explore the underwater world responsibly.

The Superb SSI ITC Facilities at Oceans 5 Gili Air: Built for Excellence from the Ground Up

The Superb SSI ITC Facilities at Oceans 5 Gili Air

When choosing where to complete your SSI Instructor Training Course (SSI ITC), the decision shouldn’t only be about the reputation of the Instructor Trainer or the pass rate on the Instructor Evaluation. It should also be about the environment in which you will learn, grow, and shape your future career as a scuba instructor. Oceans 5 Gili Air, located in the heart of the Gili Matra Marine Park, is one of the rare dive centers that didn’t just evolve into a SSI Instructor Training Center—it was designed from day one to become one.

From its inception, Oceans 5 Gili Air had a clear vision: to be a center of diving education excellence. This vision is evident in every wall, classroom, pool, and piece of infrastructure. Unlike many dive centers that later add an Instructor Trainer and adjust their operations to pursue an Instructor Training status, Oceans 5 was built with the SSI ITC concept in mind. This forward-thinking foundation is what sets it apart—not only in Indonesia but globally.

A Vision Realized in Brick, Water, and Air

Before the first course was ever taught or the first dive was ever made, the owner of Oceans 5 knew what kind of dive center he wanted to build: one that prioritizes space, comfort, professionalism, and environmental integrity. Every square meter of Oceans 5 was developed with the understanding that divers—especially professionals in training—need room to learn, room to move, and room to become confident underwater leaders.

This philosophy didn’t come as an afterthought or a marketing gimmick. It was—and still is—a core belief. And that belief materialized into what many now consider some of the best ITC facilities in Indonesia, if not Southeast Asia.

Two Massive Training Pools – Built for Real Skill Development

Most dive shops make do with one small pool, often shared among different groups. At Oceans 5 Gili Air, there are two enormous pools, each designed for specific types of training:

  • The Main Pool:
25 meters long and 5 meters wide, with multiple depth levels to accommodate everything from beginner skills to instructor-level demonstrations. This pool is ideal for mastering confined water presentations, conducting rescue scenarios, and practicing skill demonstrations during the SSI ITC.
  • The Second Pool:
Located a few steps away, this pool allows for parallel training sessions. It also helps ITC candidates practice team teaching or observe their peers from a separate environment without distraction. The presence of two pools ensures that classes are never overcrowded, and every candidate has the space and attention needed for personal improvement.

A Professional Classroom That Matches Global Standards

Education doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. The Oceans 5 classroom is a 6-meter by 12-meter air-conditioned learning environment equipped with:

  • High-speed, dedicated internet (no interruptions during research or online sessions)
  • Modern multimedia teaching aids including large displays and whiteboards
  • Comfortable chairs and plenty of desk space
  • Access to all required SSI Instructor online materials

This is not a backroom with plastic chairs. It’s a real, fully equipped training center, built to allow candidates to focus without distraction. The spacious layout encourages discussion, interaction, and collaboration, especially during ITC prep presentations and knowledge development evaluations.

Dedicated ITC Equipment Storage Room

Instructor candidates need space to store, maintain, and organize their equipment—especially when going through a 20-day intensive course like the SSI ITC Indonesia. At Oceans 5, there’s a separate equipment room reserved specifically for IDC candidates, where:

  • Gear can be stored safely and securely
  • Maintenance can be performed away from the general dive operation area
  • Candidates can organize their teaching aids and dive materials for their confined and open water presentations

This logistical support plays a huge role in reducing stress and helping candidates focus on what matters most—learning how to teach diving.

A Fleet of Comfortable Boats for Ocean Training

Getting to a dive site should be smooth, reliable, and stress-free. Oceans 5 Gili Air owns three spacious dive boats, ready to transport instructor candidates to the dive sites around the Gili Islands. These boats:

  • Have ample shade and equipment storage
  • Are manned by experienced boat crews who know the local waters well
  • Are scheduled efficiently to ensure there is no rush or overcrowding

Instructor candidates practice Open Water presentations at real dive sites around the Gili Islands, applying neutral buoyancy techniques and real-world scenario training in some of Indonesia’s most beautiful coral environments.

Comfort and Relaxation Areas That Foster Learning

Learning is most effective when it’s paired with comfort and recovery. Oceans 5 understands that long days in the classroom and pool require balance. That’s why the center is surrounded by:

  • Berugas – traditional Indonesian covered platforms with cushions and shade
  • Beanbags and loungers – perfect for unwinding between training sessions
  • Sunbeams and shaded picnic tables – for debriefings, logbook updates, or casual chats with fellow candidates

These relaxing spaces aren’t just about comfort—they create a community vibe where candidates connect, share ideas, and build friendships that often last long after the IDC is over.

A Dive Center Designed for Career Development

From the very beginning, Oceans 5 Gili Air had a clear mission: to be more than just a dive shop. While many centers around the world decide years later to “upgrade” by hiring an instructor trainer and applying for Instructor Training status, Oceans 5 did it differently.

Becoming a SSI Instructor Training Center was part of the original blueprint. This meant:

  • Designing pools with instructor training in mind
  • Building large classrooms to meet professional teaching requirements
  • Integrating a teaching philosophy based on environmental awareness and student-centered learning
  • Keeping class sizes small, to focus on quality over quantity

Today, that foresight is paying off—not only in the form of awards and recognition but in the satisfaction and success of hundreds of professional-level divers who have passed through the IDC program.

Environmental Awareness Embedded in the Facilities and Philosophy

What also makes the ITC experience at Oceans 5 unique is the commitment to marine conservation that permeates every aspect of the dive center. Facilities are designed not only for comfort and efficiency but with a minimal environmental footprint. For example:

  • Single-use plastics are avoided on-site
  • Marine debris collected during clean-ups is sorted and sent to Lombok for recycling
  • Instructor candidates are taught to conduct all skills neutrally buoyant, reducing damage to reefs and teaching students by example

These practices aren’t trends—they’re part of the original vision when the dive shop was founded. Oceans 5 Gili Air is more than just a business; it’s a center that believes instructors should act as ambassadors of the ocean, and its facilities are built to support that belief.

A Dive Shop That Looks Big But Operates Small

One of the first things visitors say when they arrive at Oceans 5 Gili Air is, “Wow, this is a big dive shop.” And yes, visually it is spacious, with multiple buildings, pools, boats, and lounges. But in reality, Oceans 5 operates with a small team ethos.

  • No more than six candidates per ITC means the classroom never feels overcrowded
  • The instructor-to-student ratio is low, providing personalized coaching and feedback
  • The support team is familiar, friendly, and deeply involved in each candidate’s journey

So while the facility might appear “large,” the experience is intimate, focused, and supportive—ideal for personal and professional growth.

Conclusion: A Dive Center Built for the Future of Diving Education

The superb facilities at Oceans 5 Gili Air aren’t just impressive—they are purpose-built for producing confident, environmentally conscious dive professionals. From day one, the vision was to build a true SSI Instructor Training Center, not just a dive shop that offered instructor courses. That vision is visible in every classroom, every pool, and every eco-conscious decision made.

If you’re considering becoming a SSI Instructor, ask yourself this: Do you want to train in a place that evolved into an Instructor Training Center—or in a place that was born to be one?

Oceans 5 Gili Air is not just a dive center. It’s a professional training ground designed for those who are serious about diving education, environmental responsibility, and lifelong learning. Whether you’re sitting in the shaded classroom, hovering neutrally in the pool, or relaxing in a beruga after a workshop, you’ll feel it: This place was made for you to succeed.

Unlocking Career Potential in the Diving Industry: Beyond the Burnout

Introduction: The Dilemma of Dive Instructor Burnout

SSI Dive Instructor | Burnout | Scuba Diving Indonesia
Dive Instructor Gili Islands

For many, the allure of the diving industry lies in its promise of adventure, exploration, and a lifestyle immersed in the beauty of the underwater world. However, beneath the surface of this dream job, there exists a common narrative: the transient nature of dive instructors and the looming threat of burnout. While it’s true that many instructors find themselves exiting the profession after a couple of years, this doesn’t have to be the norm. With strategic planning and a proactive approach to career development, individuals can carve out a fulfilling and sustainable career path within the dive industry.

Navigating the Typical Trajectory: Challenges Faced by Dive Instructors

The typical trajectory of a dive instructor often follows a predictable pattern. Initially drawn to the profession by a passion for diving, instructors find themselves working tirelessly, often in bustling dive destinations, to meet the demands of teaching courses and guiding dives. However, the repetitive nature of daily tasks coupled with the weight of responsibility can lead to boredom or burnout over time. Many instructors reach a point where they feel they’ve exhausted the excitement and opportunities within their current role.

Diversification: Expanding Horizons Beyond Teaching

To combat this, diversifying one’s skill set and exploring alternative career paths within the diving industry is crucial. While teaching may be the primary focus, there are numerous avenues for professional growth and advancement.

1. Management Opportunities: Leading Dive Centers to Success

One such path is transitioning into a managerial role within a dive shop. Dive instructors possess a wealth of knowledge about diving courses, scheduling, and local dive sites, making them well-suited for management positions. By taking on leadership responsibilities, instructors can leverage their expertise to enhance the operations of the dive center while still maintaining opportunities for occasional teaching and diving excursions.

2. Marketing and Promotion: Showcasing the Beauty of the Underwater World

For those with a flair for marketing and a passion for photography, the role of a marketing manager offers an exciting blend of creativity and business acumen. By showcasing the beauty of the underwater world through captivating imagery and compelling storytelling, individuals can play a pivotal role in attracting customers and promoting the dive shop’s offerings.

3. Advancing to SSI Instructor Trainer: Mentoring the Next Generation

Another avenue for career progression is pursuing advanced certifications to become a SSI Instructor Trainer. While this path requires additional training and qualifications, it opens doors to mentoring and training future dive professionals. As a SSI Instructor Trainer, individuals have the opportunity to shape the next generation of dive instructors, passing on their knowledge and passion for diving to a new cohort of enthusiasts.

Maintaining Longevity: Prioritizing Self-Care and Professional Development

However, the key to longevity in the diving industry lies not only in career advancement but also in personal development and self-care. Avoiding burnout requires a proactive approach to maintaining a healthy work-life balance and nurturing one’s passion for diving. Incorporating regular fun dives, exploring new dive sites, and continuing education are essential for staying engaged and inspired in the profession.

Conclusion: Charting a Course to a Fulfilling Career Beneath the Waves

Ultimately, the dive industry offers a multitude of opportunities for those willing to explore beyond the traditional career path of a dive instructor. By diversifying skills, pursuing leadership roles, and prioritizing self-care, individuals can unlock the full potential of a career in diving, ensuring longevity and fulfillment in this exhilarating profession. So, dive in, explore new horizons, and chart your course to a rewarding career beneath the waves.

Why should we dive with Nitrox?

Enriched Air Nitrox specialty and instructor specialty courses at Oceans 5 Dive Resort.

Oceans 5 offers both Enriched Air Nitrox (EANX) specialty and instructor specialty courses

What is EANX?

EANX or better known simply as Nitrox is a gasmix with a higher oxygen concentration compared to air. In the diving industry we say that air consists of 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. A Nitrox gasmix would be any mix with a concentration of oxygen higher than 21%.

nitrox course at dive resort oceans 5

Why diving on EANX?

The time divers can spend at the bottom depends on a few variables:

The first one is gasconsumption. Unfortunately Nitrox doesn’t change anything about our breathing. The gasconsumption, compared to air, will be exactly the same, keeping environmental changes in mind.

nitrox course at dive resort oceans 5 gili air in indonesia.jpg

The second variable is nitrogen intake. Divers are limited in bottomtime depending on the amount of nitrogen in the body. By means of tables and dive computers, dives can be planned so that divers stay within the set limits of their maximum nitrogen intake.

nitrox courses in indonesia.jpg

Because of the higher oxygen concentration in a Nitrox mix, naturally the concentration of nitrogen is lower compared to air. A lower concentration of nitrogen means that divers take less nitrogen in during their dives, which results in the ability to plan longer bottom times while staying within limits. Wet season arrives roughly somewhere in November and ends start of May, with the occasional rain showers in the month after. Because of their geographic location, the Gili Islands enjoy a very comfortable micro climate. The rainclouds tend to pass over as they get drawn towards the big volcanoes on Lombok, which results in a maximum of 2h of rain on average a day.
During this time the islands turns into a lush, green place where wildlife flourishes. You hear the mating calls from our resident Tokeh Tokeh’s (big gecko’s) around sunset, baby monitor lizards playing around in swimming pools, butterflies dancing and our tropical birds feeding their newborns.

The water temperature in the ocean stays fairly constant (27-30), with a slight drop of visibility due to all the nutrients coming in when our currents shift occassionally. This brings a big behavioural change in our marine eco system. Plenty of food to go by for all the species we have around the Gili’s. You can see fry and fingerlings feeding in great numbers, which provides food for some bigger fish and the ball starts rolling. The result is divers enjoying eventful dives with a lot of action.
Our macrolife also has its share of all the riches this time of the year, which makes the islands perfect for photographers during rainy season.
And last but not least we have whalesharks, manta rays and devil rays passing by on occasion to feed on all the goodies. While there is never any guarantee to see them, rainy season is where you have the best chance of spotting them.

This time of the year brings changes, and these changes are welcome every year! Its amazing how a bit of water can change both the look of the island, and everything and everyone that lives on and around the islands.
Come and experience a green lush paradise where diving will stun you. Sign up for a course if you’re not a diver yet, book fundives with our amazing local guides who will take you on a tour in their underwater backyard or sign up for your IDC if you would like to teach people how to dive in places like Gili Air.
