The 15th of August Oceans 5 dive resort conducts a Emergency First response instructor course (EFRI).

The course takes 2 days. During this course you will learn CPR and first aid skills. CPR and first aid are important skills that are in high demand. As an Emergency First Response Instructor, you can teach these skills to others so they can be prepared for an emergency.

The course is not only made for divers but also for everyone who is interested to become a EFR instructor.

Busy times, high season is starting….

The last few days the amount of people arriving on Gili Air is increasing. We see them every day arriving in front of Oceans 5 dive resort with the fast boats from Bali.

Not all of the people who are visiting Gili Air are diving but a lot of them do. Diving, and snorkeling are the main attractions of the island. It is beautiful world under the water and you can find it all around the Gili Islands.

For people who never dived before, there are pools to try scuba diving, like the Oceans 5 pool. A 25 meter pool specially made for scuba diving. It is a perfect place to start your first dive experiences.

Yesterday Oceans 5 dive resort had 21 students in the pool. If you look at the picture you will see there is space for everyone, and that the instructor are teaching only small groups, max 4 persons.

Beach and Reef clean up Gili Air, Gili Islands

Fantastic show up today for the beach and reef clean up in the harbor of Gili Air.

Special thanks for the students of the Bali International School (BIS). They teached the local kids to clean the island. Also Oceans 5 like to thank Blue Marlin Gili Air. They came with a lot of people and joined the clean up.

The end result was 10 bags of rubbish, still there is more. Hopefully we see you next wednesday!

Its always nice after your dive or between your dives to relax. Till now Oceans 5 had only the traditional barugas and the pool with sun beds for relaxing.

Oceans 5 dive resort is creating now a space where people can relax. Around a tree there are 6 hammocks where people can enjoy there time.

So come and try our new hammocks and enjoy the beautiful day!

One of the problems on the Gili Islands is beach erosion. Beach erosion is defined by the actual removal of sand from a beach to deeper water offshore or alongshore into inlets, tidal shoals and bays. Such erosion can result from any number of factors, including the simple inundation of the land by rising sea levels resulting from the melting of the polar ice caps.

In the last few year there was a lot of beach erosion around the Gili Islands.
Specially the North Coast of the Gili Islands and more actual the East Coasts of the Gili Islands lost a lot of beach in the last couple of years. Meters of beach dissapeard at the last storm in March 2012.Of particular concern is the effect climate change, which not only causes sea levels to rise but also increases the severity and possibly the frequency of harsh storms, has on beach erosion. While sea level rise sets the conditions for landward displacement of the shore, coastal storms supply the energy to do the ‘geologic work’ by moving the sand off and along the beach. Therefore, beaches are greatly influenced by the frequency and magnitude of storms along a particular shoreline.Besides collectively lowering our greenhouse gas emissions substantially, there is little that individuals—let alone coastal landowners—can do to stop beach erosion. Building a bulkhead or seawall along one or a few coastal properties may protect homes from damaging storm waves for a few years, but could end up doing more harm than good. Bulkheads and seawalls may accelerate beach erosion by reflecting wave energy off the facing wall, impacting adjacent property owners as well, adding that such structures along retreating shorelines eventually cause diminished beach width and even loss.

Oceans 5 dive resort is trying to save some beach by replanting trees on the beach. The sand will not move that quick and hopefully the beach erosion doesnt goes that fast as in the past.

Sharkpoint Gili Trawangan, Gili Islands

In a lot of dive destinations there are dive sites with names that only gives you as diver false expectations. There are Manta Points, Sharkpoints, Frogfish Points etc which doesnt offer what the name tells you. Sharkpoint on the Gili islands is not a dive site like that! Sharkpoint has his sharks!

Sharkpoint is the most famous dive spot around the Gili Islands. Its located on the West side of Gili Trawangan. A flat sandy bottom turns into a series of progressively deeper canyons that run parallel to the shore.

In the shallow part of Sharkpoint you will find for sure turtles in all kind of sizes. This will the Hawksbill and Green Sea Turtle. In the deeper part there is a good change to see the White Tip Reef Sharks, the school of Jack Fish and Baracudas.

Around full moon the Bumphead Parrotfish shows up from the deeper part of the ocean. This is one of the most beautiful moments that you as diver can have surrounded with 30 Bumpheads.

Sharkpoint is a dive site that is never boring, there is always a lot of marine life around. The dive site is suitable for all kind of divers.

Enjoy your dive!

Football tournament at Gili Trawangan started, bad luck for FC Oceans 5

Yesterday Oceans 5 dive Gili Air had his first Match. The opponent was FC Unzip, another team from Gili Air with the well knowned Muzzy as Manager.

The trip started to get to Trawangan. 30 Supporters of the Oceans 5 team and the team headed on the little boat, bianca, at 15.30 to Gili Trawangan. The waves and the wind was picking up during the trip. At one point the boat had to fight against 2 meter high waves. We were happy that all of made it “safely” to Gili Trawangan without serious damages……

Well in 40 minutes team reached Gili Trawangan, and walked to the pit. There the whole team was coloured Orange, the colour of Oceans 5 and Holland. They were looking good but with looking good you dont win games…..

It was an excellent game. Unzipped scored a nice Goal and just before half time Oceans 5 made the equalizer. The game was all open. A lot a changes for both teams to make more goals, but at the end FC Unzipped was a little bit luckier and made the winning goal. The final score was 2-1 for FC Unzipp

At this time there are no worries for FC Oceans 5. They can still play in the next round if they win the next match against rivival Scallywags. This match is on the 9th of October.

If you are interested in the games, everyday there are games at Gili Trawangan. Come and join……

Dive Gili Air: Gili Islands Dive Resort Oceans 5 supports Reef Check survey January 2011

From 28-30 January 2011, our friends from Reef Check Foundation Indonesia visited the Gili Islands again to monitor the development of the reef prior to bleaching and to have a better understanding of the resilience and recovery level of the reef.
We conducted a post bleaching survey, to identify how the reefs respond the increased temperature last mid year. The result of the survey is really important in providing information for reef managers to determine the right measure in managing coral reef under the warming climate.
Reef Check monitored Hans Reef and the snorkel area in front of Chill out bar in Gili Air and Halik reef, Rainbow reef on Gili Trawangan and Meno slope with help of Oceans 5 and the Gili Eco Trust.
Soon the results of the survey will be published.
