Gili Air is often described as paradise. White sandy beaches, crystal-clear water, healthy coral reefs, sea turtles, and a relaxed island atmosphere have made it one of Indonesia’s most popular tourism destinations. Thousands of visitors travel here every year because of its unique combination of nature and local culture.

But behind this paradise, an uncomfortable question is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore:

Why does nobody seem to care about the long-term future of Gili Air?

Development Without Understanding

During the past decade, the island has experienced rapid development. New hotels, restaurants, villas, beach clubs and businesses continue to appear.

Development itself is not the problem. Sustainable development can benefit both local communities and visitors.

The real concern is that many developments appear to happen without a proper understanding of Indonesian regulations, conservation laws, or the environmental limitations of such a small island.

Many investors simply lease or purchase land and start building. Sometimes they copy what neighbouring businesses have done, assuming that if another building exists, it must be allowed. Unfortunately, that is not always how Indonesian law works.

Every project should be assessed based on current regulations, required permits and environmental impacts.

Indonesia Already Has the Rules

One of the surprising realities is that Indonesia already has extensive legislation covering areas like Gili Air.

Many do not know that Gili Air is part of a protected marine park.

Many are unfamiliar with coastal setback rules or beach-use regulations.

Others simply assume that if something has been built before, they are allowed to do the same.

Good intentions are not enough.

Operating inside a marine protected area requires knowledge and responsibility.

The Marine Park Is Bigger Than One Island

Another misconception is viewing Gili Air in isolation.

Gili Air is not a separate entity.

It forms part of the Gili Matra Marine Tourism Park, together with Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.

The health of the reefs, fish populations, water quality and coastal ecosystems is interconnected across all three islands.

Damage occurring on one island eventually affects the entire marine park.

Protecting only the underwater environment while ignoring what happens on land is not enough.

Everything is connected.

Growth Cannot Continue Forever

Economic growth is important.

Tourism has improved living standards for many families on Gili Air.

But every island has a carrying capacity.

There comes a point where an island simply cannot sustainably support additional visitors, buildings or infrastructure without degrading the very environment that attracts people in the first place.

The warning signs are becoming increasingly visible.

  • Beach erosion in several locations.
  • Buildings appearing closer to the shoreline.
  • Pressure on freshwater resources.
  • Increasing waste production.
  • Greater demand for electricity.
  • More pressure on marine ecosystems.
  • Increasing coastal modification.

None of these issues exist in isolation.

Conservation Cannot Stop at the Waterline

Many organizations on Gili Air work hard to protect coral reefs, remove marine debris and educate visitors.

These efforts deserve recognition.

However, conservation should not stop once you leave the water.

If coastal construction, erosion, habitat loss and unsustainable development continue unchecked, they will eventually undermine the very reefs everyone is trying to protect.

Healthy coral reefs depend on healthy coastlines.

Protecting one while ignoring the other risks solving only part of the problem.

Conservation is sometimes uncomfortable because it requires speaking up when environmental decisions may have long-term consequences.

The Future Generation Has More to Lose

A common response is:

“If tourism disappears, we can always go back to fishing or farming.”

That may have been realistic decades ago.

Today’s generation lives in a very different world.

Children study in Lombok and even Jakarta.

Families own smartphones, motorbikes and modern homes.

Education and healthcare expectations have changed dramatically.

Tourism has created opportunities that simply did not exist before.

If the natural environment that supports tourism is damaged beyond recovery, returning to the economy of fifty years ago will not be easy.

Future generations would inherit a very different island than the one their parents enjoyed.

Caring Before It Is Too Late

Perhaps the most worrying issue is not illegal construction, beach erosion or increasing development.

It is indifference.

Too many people assume someone else will solve the problem.

Government will fix it.

NGOs will fix it.

The national park will fix it.

Business owners will fix it.

Eventually.

But sustainable tourism only works when everyone accepts responsibility.

Government agencies.

Local communities.

Foreign investors.

Business owners.

Tourists.

Environmental organizations.

Every decision made today shapes what Gili Air will look like in ten, twenty or fifty years.

The island’s future should not be measured only by the number of new hotels or restaurants that can be built.

It should also be measured by whether future generations can still enjoy healthy coral reefs, clean beaches, abundant marine life and the unique atmosphere that made people fall in love with Gili Air in the first place.

Because once those things are lost, they are far more difficult to rebuild than another hotel.

Last time our divemaster trainees and customers took a lot of rubbish out of the harbor, but there was more.

Oceans 5 descided to do another Beach and Reef Clean Up, so that the beautiful dive site in the front of the dive shop will not totally covered with plastic rubbish.

At 16.30 all the people came for the reef clean up Gili Islands at Oceans 5 dive resort. Instructor John looked after them and gave them a briefing about safety, what kind of rubbish to collect, the buddy team, and the depth and dive time.

After 1 hour the eco divers came out of the water, not with the same amount as last time but still 4 bags full.

Can you tell us the age of a fish?

One way to tell the age of a fish is by looking at its scales. They have growth rings just like trees. These are called circuli. Clusters of them are called annuli. Each annuli show one year.

Like the picture shows you, this fish is 10 years old.

Top 10 Most Endangered Fish: Number 3

Goliath Grouper

All species of grouper are endangered to some extent, but the Goliath Grouper is particularly threatened. Also known as the jewfish, it lives in the subtropical areas of the eastern Pacific (from Baja California to Peru) and the Atlantic (from North Carolina to Brazil). As the name suggests, it’s a very large fish, growing to 7 feet in length in its 40-year life span. Overfishing of the Goliath grouper is a result of two main issues. First, it reproduces for only a short period of time, resulting in relatively few offspring compared to other species. Second, juveniles often become accidental bycatch in other fishing operations. What fish remain are targeted during spawning by hook-and-line fishing boats. Out of concern for the Goliath grouper’s survival, the United States banned harvest of the species, and the IUCN rated them as critically endangered.

Bocaccio Rockfish

Of the more than 70 species of rockfish living off the United States’ west coast, the bocaccio rockfish is one of the most endangered. While this 3-foot fish reaches reproductive age sooner than many overfished species — as early as four to five years — its larvae have a very low survival rate. Changes in ocean currents and temperature since the 1970s mean that large numbers of bocaccio larvae live to become juveniles only once every 20 years. In response to their dwindling numbers, the United States closed several fisheries along the West Coast in 2002. But even without trawling in these areas, scientists believe it could take 100 years for bocaccio populations to recover. With such significant challenges to recovery, the IUCN has listed the species as critically endangered.

Orange Roughy

Also known as the “slimehead,” the orange roughy has a wide-ranging habitat that includes the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, Namibia and the northeast Atlantic Ocean. Its life expectancy is up to 149 years, and it reaches sexual maturation age between 20 and 32 years, making it the epitome of a species inherently vulnerable to overfishing. The pressure of overfishing is amplified by fishermen’s tendency to trawl for orange roughy when the fish congregate to feed and breed. The resulting catches wipe out generations. Though the IUCN hasn’t reviewed this species to determine if it is endangered, a number of other organizations have recognized the significant decline in its numbers after only 25 years of commercial harvesting.

Bycatch

Bycatch are sea creatures caught unintentionally. This can either be ocean dwellers other than the desired species or juveniles of the desired species.

Facts about Saylor Eyeballs

Sailor’s eyeballs are giant single-celled algae found in the Indo-Pacific down to 20 meters depth. They have other common names, such as bubble algae and sea pearl algae.

You will find Saylor Eyeballs everywhere in Indonesia. When you are diving around the Gili Islands, you will find them at Halik Reef, Sunset Reef, Hans Reef and Sharkpoint. You will find them in all diffent sizes.

These algae look rather like huge marbles, reaching up to 5 centimeters in diameter, and grow on coral and rocky reefs, attaching to the substrate by hair-like filaments called rhizoids.

Young plants are translucent with a bluish sheen, while older ones become encrusted, for example by coralline red seaweeds.

Sailor’s eyeballs undergo an interesting process of vegetative or asexual reproduction. Daughter cells grow inside the parent, which dies and breaks down, releasing the new plants

Top 10 Most endangered fish: Number 10

Altantic Halibut

Found in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Atlantic halibut is the largest of the flat fish species.

Boasting a 50-year lifespan, it can reach a length of 9 feet and weigh up to 1,000 pounds. But because this slow-growing fish doesn’t become sexually mature until it’s 10 to 14 years old, it’s particularly susceptible to overfishing. While Atlantic halibut are normally caught with hooks-and-lines, they’re often caught as bycatch in bottom trawl fisheries. The IUCN classifies them as endangered, and their numbers are not expected recover in the near future. This has prompted the United States to ban Atlantic halibut fishing in its coastal waters.
